Vegan, natural, and plant-based food that highlights the diversity of plants. Purezza’s also serves raw foods, such as courgetti and a lentil-based pure bowl, gluten-free pasta dishes and burgers. It is topped with a range of plant-based meat alternatives and cheeses, including a housemade rice-based mozzarella that was in development for two years. Particular praise has been heaped on the pizzeria’s wholegrain sourdough base for the cooked crust’s fluffy texture and flavour. Deceptively spacious, the 100-seater restaurant is set across two floors that are always packed. Like its Brighton flagship, the capital’s outpost has built a solid following for its vegan Neapolitan pizza. Having gained numerous accolades as the UK’s first vegan pizzeria, most recently at the 2019 World Pizza Championships, Purezza has become a bonafide London hit. The café’s vibrant decor makes it a popular venue for comedy nights, music gigs, open mic sessions and parties. Fresh smoothies and a selection of mushroom and plant-based lattes complement the food. Dishes include small bites like Mediterranean bread with hummus, zhoug and baba ganoush, oyster mushroom wings and gojuchang tofu, along with larger items such as the good karma shawarma flatbread with marinated mushrooms, red cabbage and pickles. This lively East London café offers a variety of plant-based dishes inspired by global flavours. Both autumn menus featured the intriguingly named berlingot carbonara with golden smoked crunch and tempeh hash with autumn wild mushrooms, chlorophyll and crisps. Diners can choose between two seasonal set menus, an eight-course ‘Grand Dîner’ tasting menu or a shorter five-course ‘Petit Dîner’ menu, which is available from Tuesday to Saturday at 5 pm. Together with its casual dining cousin, 123V, Gauthier takes an environmental stance by cutting out large carbon footprint ingredients. Expect creative pairings and experimental interpretations here – such as a barbecued loin of kohlrabi in saké beurre blanc or Norfolk heritage carrot with burnt orange cappuccino – that will challenge preconceptions about the versatility of vegetables. It is widely recognized as the first French fine-dining vegan restaurant in the UK.
